This board book is part of a new series that introduces young children to key themes from Christian theology. Each book features simple rhyming text from Kristen Wetherell and soft, colorful illustrations from Grace Habib. God Cares for Me shows scenes from nature, with creatures big and small, and shows diverse children, including one in a wheelchair. The book teaches kids that God created the world and made us, and that He loves us and provides for our needs, just as he provides for all of His creatures.
Each book in this series ends with a Christ-centered message, sharing the gospel in a way that fits with that book’s theme. Unlike the others, this one assumes more prior knowledge and refers to the crucifixion directly, talking about how God’s Son died on a tree, showing His love for us. Some parents may not be ready to talk about Jesus’s death with very young children, but they should know that this is the only book in the series so far that refers to Jesus’s sacrificial death. The other two highlight elements of the gospel.
On the final page, there is a flap to lift, revealing a mirror. The mirror paper gives a slightly wonky reflection, which is typical for books with that feature, but it’s a nice touch that personalizes the message for the child reading the book, underscoring the final message that God cares for them.
