This board book is part of a great series that introduces young children to important concepts from Christian theology. Each book features simple rhyming text from Kristen Wetherell and cute, colorful illustrations from Grace Habib. God Changes Me teaches kids that in our journey to become like Jesus, the Holy Spirit helps us grow and change. The words and illustrations give concrete examples that kids can relate to, such as a child choosing to share their toys.
The final page has a lift-the-flap feature, which reveals a mirror. The mirrored paper gives a somewhat warped reflection, as is typical for books like this, but it will engage toddlers, and it also helps personalize the message. After the book ends, there is an author’s note for parents. Kristen Wetherell explains the book’s teaching from an adult perspective, references Scripture passages, and suggests a hymn for families to sing together.
Unlike other volumes in the series, God Changes Me includes some high-level vocabulary and abstract concepts. The majority of the book expresses biblical truth in ways that little children can understand, but parents may need to pause and explain some of the more complicated words and concepts referenced here about the Holy Spirit. Also, since this book focuses on sanctification, some parents may hesitate to use this book with small children who haven’t yet made a profession of faith. The book teaches that the Holy Spirit is active in the reader’s heart, but the target audience isn’t yet at a developmental stage where professions of faith are typically relevant, let alone expected. I accepted Jesus into my heart at age three, so I’m not saying it doesn’t happen, but it’s not the norm.
This series will appeal to Christian parents who want to introduce theology to their babies and toddlers. The rhymes flow well, the messages are always clear and Bible-based, and the cute illustrations will appeal to children. Although I found this particular book less developmentally appropriate than its companion volumes, I would still recommend it as part of the series.
