I read Sunrise by Susan May Warren and Life Flight by Lynette Eason back to back, not realizing that both books featured pilots—though the male character is the aviator in Sunrise, and the female in Life Flight. Susan May Warren and Lynette Eason are by far some of my favorite authors of the romantic suspense genre, and Sunrise does not disappoint. Now that I’ve read several books by Susan May Warren, I just want to go back and read the others I missed. I love her writing style, perhaps more than any other romantic suspense author currently published. Sunrise is the fourth Warren book I have read, and it is just as satisfying as the others—if not more so. Sunrise is Susan May Warren at her best.
What I love about Warren is how beautifully she incorporates Christian messages into her novels. In some books, authors beat their readers over the head with biblical principles and sermons. I will admit, often times I find myself…glazing over those paragraphs. I read novels to escape reality, not to study a sermon. I have never done this with Warren, and I never will. The message of God’s affection and understanding is prevalent throughout Sunrise. It’s not often a book will make me smile as I read it. I usually just smile—or roll my eyes at—corny sweetness, depending on how well it is portrayed. It is rare that my lips will curl upward at anything else. But Sunrise by Susan May Warren filled my heart with warmth, a rekindled appreciation for everything God’s done…and what He will do.
Both Dodge and Echo face inexplicable challenges of their characters and their faiths. Dodge does not want to return to his ranch full-time. It’s temporary, and he doesn’t want much to do with Echo, who broke his heart. But when Echo’s life is in jeopardy, nothing will stop him from rescuing her. Echo thinks she can manage things on her own, when it comes to locating a missing friend in the woods. But in classic Warren style, that isn’t enough. Warren adds manmade elements to the natural dangers of Alaska, all in Warren’s flawless prose.
Sunrise by Susan May Warren never stops. From one page to the next, it keeps readers on the edges of their seats. The descriptions paint colorful pictures of the Alaskan landscape, and the characters are deep and relatable. They are complex, both running from different elements of their pasts that seem to be chasing them. But God’s plan prevails, and that is the message Warren emphasizes repeatedly—and wonderfully—throughout the novel. I loved everything about this book and would change nothing about it. Sunrise by Susan May Warren is a spectacular start to a series—and I can’t wait to read the rest of the novels.
