Worship the King of the everlasting Kingdom with this Storybook Bible by Award-Winning Author Bob Hartman, featuring beautiful artwork from Catalina Echeverri, illustrator of The Garden, the Curtain, and the Cross.
As they begin to step out into the world, show kids the glory of being part of God’s everlasting kingdom and belonging to Jesus, the promised and reigning King.
This beautiful storybook Bible, by beloved author Bob Hartman, is illustrated by Catalina Echeverri, the artist behind the best-selling storybook The Garden, the Curtain and the Cross. The illustrations feature compelling, dramatic, memorable imagery as the storytelling traces the theme of kingship and God’s kingdom throughout Scripture.
Kids will encounter the goodness, grandeur, and power of God as they enjoy 70 engaging and faithfully told Bible stories spanning Creation to Revelation. They’ll discover what it means to live as God’s people, in God’s kingdom, under Christ’s rule.
As they read the great story of the Scriptures, kids will meet the Creator King, the rejected King, the promise-keeping King, and then finally Jesus, God the King on earth. And they'll see how Jesus brings a wonderful new kingdom for all who trust and follow him.
Perfect for reading aloud to young children and for independent reading by older children. Each story references which Bible passages are being retold so your family can dig deeper into God’s word.
This is the second Bible storybook that I have reviewed from The Good Book Company. I wondered what would make this one distinct from the God’s Big Promises Bible Storybook, and they are different in multiple ways. The art style in The Kingdom and the King Storybook Bible is much less cartoon-style and uses more muted tones, and the stories are longer and more involved. Author Bob Hartman covers additional content and uses more sophisticated vocabulary, and also includes some tough details that people often gloss over with children.
The Kingdom and the King Storybook Bible is a large, sturdy hardcover with thick, glossy pages and a ribbon bookmark. The book goes through the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, and it focuses on the theme of kings and leaders from throughout the Bible. The stories lead up to the reveal of King Jesus, and then show how Jesus fulfills the promises that God had given from the beginning. Hartman does a great job of showing how the Bible fits together as a single story, and the eye-catching illustrations from Catalina Echeverri help emphasize important concepts.
The storybook selections include specific narratives from the Bible, such as the story of Abraham and the story of Jesus’s birth, but this book also includes summaries that help explain other parts of the Bible. For example, the reading about Isaiah explains what that book is about, gives some context for the time period, and shows how Isaiah’s prophecies point forward to Jesus. I appreciate how Hartman curated a blend of well-known stories, lesser-known moments from biblical history, and summaries of less narrative-focused Bible books.
The publisher recommends this book for ages four and up, but some families may prefer to save this for when their kids are older, especially if they have sensitive kids who would struggle with some of the darker details. This book covers a variety of difficult themes, particularly from the Old Testament. For example, the author mentions a few times that when God’s people would walk away from Him, some of them would kill their own children as sacrifices to pagan deities. If you don’t want your four-year-old to know this, then you’re better off pursuing another Bible storybook, but this book can help ease older children into a deeper understanding of the Bible, beyond sanitized and simplistic stories.
The Kingdom and the King Storybook Bible will appeal to Christian families who are looking for a Bible storybook that is faithful to Scripture, takes kids seriously, and gives kids a strong sense of the gospel story. This makes a great family read-aloud, and many parents will find it eye-opening and encouraging for them, too. I really enjoyed this book as an adult reader, and it made me love Jesus even more. And that is the strongest endorsement I can give!
