Search and find books tend to be very popular with kids, and this new release from Jan and Mike Berenstain is great for young children. This large-format board book includes eight full page spreads with lots of things to look for in the illustrations, and each page spread represents a different Bible story. The selections range from creation to The Last Supper, and there is a paragraph-length description of the Bible story in each section. The final page includes an additional paragraph, linking The Last Supper to Jesus’s death and resurrection.
The search and find activities invite children to look for different animals and objects in the illustrations, and some of the activities also include a counting component, with some things appearing multiple times throughout the pictures. The activities vary somewhat in difficulty, but are all accessible to the intended age range. Unlike with search and find books for older children, which include cluttered layouts and lots of tiny things, this is very basic and nothing is too hard to spot.
The Berenstain Bears Storybook Bible Search and Find will appeal to Christian families who are fans of the Berenstain Bears. Of course, people who are sensitive to illustrated portrayals of Jesus may be uncomfortable with him looking like a Berenstain Bear here, but nothing about the book felt disrespectful or irreverent to me. I think that this book is really cute and fun, and it’s a great introduction for young kids to favorite Bible stories and search and find activities.
