Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13

The world reeled. And wept. Our hearts tried to absorb the shockwaves. To make sense of the madness. The peace of a Haitian children’s home and school shattered with cries and fire. And blood. Three beautiful servant hearts murdered . . . brutally. Judes, Davy, and Natalie joined the ranks of that grand company of martyrs in May 2024.

When David and Alicia Lloyd opened a children’s home in Haiti, they had no idea how their hearts would soar, humbled by the way God was expanding and blessing the ministry. And they had no idea how much it would cost—their son, his young wife, and their dear friend. Strong to the End tells the story of Davy, Natalie, and Judes—their lives, dreams, love, faith, and deaths. It tells the story of Haiti, a beautiful land besieged by natural disasters, poverty, and gang violence. And it asks the hard questions of the Christian life.

What does it mean to count the cost before you know the price?
What are moral, ethical, and spiritual dynamics in modern missions?
When should you protect yourself and your family?
How do you love those bent on persecuting you?
Is Jesus really worth living—and dying—for?

With the bodies of their loved ones in the ground, these questions were raised in their hearts. This book invites readers to weep, wrestle, rejoice . . . and draw courage from the faithful.

This sobering book shares a true story of modern martyrs in Haiti. Authors David and Alicia Lloyd have a long history of missions work in Haiti, and their son Davy grew up there and considered that country to be his primary earthly home. After Davy married his wife, Natalie, she joined him in Haiti. They served at the family’s children’s home until gang members murdered them and Judes, a local ministry partner. This book shares memories about the authors’ loved ones, covers the tragedy and its aftermath, and reflects on the legacy these three Christian servants left behind.

Even though this book focuses on the personal narrative, it also addresses some broader issues, explaining how historic oppression, political corruption, and natural disasters have led to Haiti’s extreme social unrest and economic instability. The authors write with compassion for the gang members, and with a heart for lasting change and healing in this country that they love. They also write with great affection for their son, daughter-in-law, and ministry partner. I appreciate that they repeatedly honored Judes’s sacrifice and did not make him an afterthought.

At the beginning of Strong to the End, the publisher offers a brief advisory, noting that “certain sections are intense” and that parents may want to evaluate what is appropriate for “younger children.” As a result of that phrasing, I wasn’t expecting this book to be as graphic as it is. Older kids and adults may struggle with the explicit, detailed descriptions of violent acts and the human carnage. I would extend the trigger warning to all ages.

My one other concern is that the presentation here makes Davy and Natalie seem too saintly and perfect. This can make a young person who reads this feel like they aren’t qualified for ministry or missions, because they’re not that holy and amazing. It is natural for the authors to only focus on the positive traits of their lost loved ones, and it sounds like Davy and Natalie were truly exceptional Christians. Nonetheless, I wish that this book had included even vague reminders that they were sinners too, and that they had their own missteps and failings. That would help them feel more like role models for young people, and less like a standard of perfection that one could never attain.

Strong to the End: The Simple Service and Sudden Sacrifice of the Martyrs in Haiti is a heartfelt true story. This well-written book is honest and inspiring, and it grapples with darkness without relying on platitudes. This book allows readers to sit with heavy questions about why God allows terrible things to happen, and it shows the Lloyd family’s commitment to showing up and serving others in spite of the cost. I recommend this book to teens and adults who appreciate missions stories and can handle reading about graphic violence.
