This is the second book in the TimeFall trilogy, a middle-grade science fiction series for Christian kids. The story picks up right where The Unlikely Intrusion of Adams Klein left off. All three books form a single story, and it is essential to read them in sequential order. In this second installment, the main characters experience new challenges in the dystopian society where Adams Klein lived before his trip to 2015. The story has exciting twists and turns, and the science fiction world-building is great. John Greco created an convincing futuristic world, and the setting feels immersive.
This story continues the original narrative, while also adding new secondary characters and some new threats. In this part of the trilogy, there are more pronounced faith themes, particularly related to some characters’ beliefs in or questions about the sovereignty of God. This story is full of action and excitement, and this volume includes some more intense sequences than the original, with action violence and peril. The only other content note is a bit of a spoiler, but I think it’s important to mention it. The villain wants to bring the Egyptian god Osiris into the world, to partner with him.
The author presents this mythological touch with a Christian worldview, with characters explaining that even though there is only one God, various demonic influences throughout time have been worshiped as gods. This story presents Osiris as a dark, demonic presence, not as a rival to the Christian God. Nonetheless, some families may be uncomfortable with the demonic themes, so I thought it was important to mention this.
The Bewildering Courage of Emma Bloom is a thrilling science fiction adventure. I enjoyed this and didn’t want to put it down, and I know I would have also enjoyed it as a preteen. In my opinion, this is the strongest book in the series. The author’s storytelling improved after the first novel, and since he did such a wonderful job developing the futuristic, dystopian world, I found this second book’s setting the most exciting.
