This picture book introduces key concepts about prayer, teaching children how to talk to God. The bright, colorful illustrations feature familiar Bible characters in the Beginner’s Bible art style, and the book explains what prayer is and where, when, and how to pray. Then the book introduces different types of prayer: praising God through prayer, asking God for things, repenting of sin, complaining in prayer, and giving thanks. Each section is simple and straightforward, and they all end with a short Bible story that gives an example of prayer. The book also shares The Lord’s Prayer at the end.

The Beginner’s Bible Let’s Learn to Pray: Talk to God about Anything and Everything is a great resource for Christian parents and Sunday school teachers to use with kids. Early elementary students can also read this to themselves and use it independently. The book explains prayer and retells Bible stories in simple, kid-friendly language, helping kids understand why prayer is important and how they can talk to God. The book covers the basics without talking down to kids, and it takes them seriously as individuals who can have a meaningful relationship with God.

My one critique is that the section about “complaining” in prayer doesn’t differentiate biblical lament from ungodly grumbling. I get that ‘lament’ is a complicated word, and that the authors at Zonderkids were looking for something simpler, but because the Bible specifically commands us not to grumble and complain, the language in this section could be confusing. God can handle all of our big feelings, and we can be honest with Him about how upset we are, but lamenting in prayer is still different from whining and grumbling with a bad attitude. Some parents and teachers will want to make this clarification themselves, but I wish that the book had added more nuance here. Nonetheless, this is a great, kid-friendly resource that I would recommend.
