Share the celebration of God’s good design for girls through the companion kid’s book It’s Good to Be a Girl.

This companion book to It’s Good to Be a Girl celebrates God’s design for boys. The simple words, rhyming refrain, and colorful illustrations are perfect for kids ages 3-7, and the book offers a clear, positive message about what it means to be a boy. It’s Good to Be a Boy teaches that God created everything, including the first man, and that God intends for boys to work hard, grow life, and keep things safe. Author Champ Thornton explains that God made boys and girls in His image and wants them to love and serve others, just like He does.

After this, Thornton gives examples of how boys can serve others. He mentions some role models from the Bible, and he also writes about Jesus, giving examples of Jesus’s love and service. Thornton explains that when we’re selfish and don’t want to help others, or feel too tired to make a difference, we can turn to Jesus for forgiveness and strength. After this, Thornton mentions some role models from history: Eric Liddell (athlete and missionary), William Wilberforce (politician and moral reformer), George Herbert (pastor and poet), and Francis Grimké (pastor, educator, and early civil rights activist). Thornton then names different types of careers, emphasizing that no matter what job a man has, he can use it as an avenue for serving God and others.

The illustrations from Hsulynn Pang add visual appeal while also directly supporting the book’s message. Full-page artwork and little vignettes visualize key concepts, show diverse men and boys at work, and create recognizable likenesses of the historical figures. The illustrations also show a father and son interacting throughout the book, and that gives this a nice personal touch, as if the whole book is a conversation between father and son.

It’s Good to Be a Boy: A Celebration of All That God Made You to Be is a lovely book for Christian parents who want to build a sense of self-worth and purpose in their sons. This is also great for families to share with girls. I personally recommend using both books together, regardless whether you have sons or daughters. These books can help kids resist stereotypes, value themselves and others, and appreciate God’s design for humanity.
