Help your tween turn an interest in baking into hands-on practice, one recipe at a time.
Created by twin sisters Evy and Nola Halberstadt with their mom, bestselling author Abbie Halberstadt, this cookbook brings together family-favorite recipes and practical instruction for young bakers. A “Baking Basics” section introduces useful fundamentals before the recipes begin, so your child can understand the process before trying it for themselves with some adult supervision.

build confidence and try more challenging recipes as their skill level increasesWhether your child is just beginning or is looking for new recipes to create, this cookbook helps you bake together and make sweet treats and even sweeter memories.
This collection of sweet recipes will delight new and experienced bakers alike. Identical twins Evy and Nola Halberstadt love to bake treats for their siblings and parents, and they collected some of their favorite recipes into this cookbook. They wrote this book with the assistance of their mother, Abbie Halberstadt, who writes Christian books about motherhood. Although her success gave the girls the opportunity to write this cookbook, it is an excellent book on its own terms.
Unlike with some cookbooks that are geared towards kids, this one isn’t dumbed down or oversimplified. These recipes offer kids a real challenge, while also guiding them through the process each step of the way. The instructions here will help beginning bakers develop lifelong skills in the kitchen, and experienced bakers will enjoy the selection of recipes here.
The chapters in Double Delights focus on different categories: breakfast, bread, snacks, cookies and bars, and special sweets. Each chapter begins with a literary quotation from a favorite novel, and I found this delightful. The Halberstadt twins introduce each recipe with a short descriptive blurb, telling readers what to expect and mentioning personal connections with each recipe. They also share personal thoughts and stories in the “Behind the Apron” sections at the end of each chapter. The friendly tone and personal touches make this cookbook extra appealing.
Each recipe offers step-by-step instructions, along with attractive photographs of the finished product. There are also notes to identify the gluten-free and/or dairy-free recipes in the book, although this is a very small percentage of the content. Some steps require parental help or supervision, but tweens and teens will be able to do a lot independently. I appreciate that the instructions truly lay out everything, step-by-step. I have read other children’s cookbooks where adult writers skipped over details they thought would be obvious to everyone. The recipes in this book are much more beginner-friendly.
Double Delights: A Baking Cookbook for Tweens and Teens with Easy Recipes and Baking Basics will appeal to kids who are interested in baking sweet treats. Fans of Abbie Halberstadt will enjoy sharing this book with their children, but you don’t need to be familiar with the girls’ mother to appreciate this excellent cookbook. This is a top-notch guide for kids and adults who want to learn how to bake, or who want to add some delicious new recipes to their repertoire.
